The Cold Hard Truth-Monday Morning Quarterback

Offensive Player of the Week- Josh Freeman. His stats aren’t anything that jumps out at you in his first NFL start, Freeman looked real good. He made smart decisions and only turned the ball over once. (wow, I thought rookies QB’s weren’t supposed to do that) Anyway, he deserves it and if he keeps this up he could make a late run for rookie of the year.

Honorable Mention-Micheal Turner, Greg Olsen

Defensive Player of the Week- Louis Delmas. Might be a bit of a stretch but can you imagine the score if he wasn’t in the game? That was a beautiful INT and he read the play perfectly. Then that tackle he made on Jones was pure effort and he deserves all the credit in the world just for it.

Honorable Mention- Jonathan Babineaux, David Hawthorn

Ten Things I Think

1. The two undefeated teams faced quite the scare this week but they did what good teams do, once they have a lead they don’t give it up and they find ways to win.

2. The rebirth of Cedric Benson has to be one of the best stories of the year. He had another 100 yard game against the Ravens D!!!! He’s one of the main reasons that the Bengals are once again a serious contender in the AFC.

3. My god the Bears suck.

4. Vince Young, comeback player of the year? If he can lead the Titans to five wins this year, I’d say he most certainly is.

5. Anytime the Packers lose it’s a good, good day. Anytime the Packers lose to a win less team, it’s a great day. Anytime the Lions squander a 17 point lead, it’s expected.

6. Dallas Clark is the best tight end in the NFL. In fact, I don’t think there’s a doubt in my mind. He’s a great blocker and is a lock to have 7 catches for 75 yards every week. Not many others can say that.

7. Interesting how players that play in their first game with a new team always seem to light it up. Chris Chambers today was unreal. I’m not exactly sure if it was his first game with the Chiefs but regardless, he deserves props.

8. Tommie Harris should be suspended for being such an idiot.

9. Roy Williams and Tony Romo will figure everything out and be just fine for the rest of the season. I wouldn’t be surprised if Williams has 100 yards receiving tonight against the Eagles. (writing this before the game)

10. How great is it when the Vikings have a bye week!!!!?? No mention of any over rated players!

Top Ten List

1. New Orleans Saints

2. Indy Colts

3. Denver Broncos

4. New England Pats

5. Minny Vikes

6. CinciyBengals

7. Pittsburgh Steelers

8. Arizona Cards

9. Atlanta Falcons

10. Dallas Cowboys

Lions Thoughts of the Week

Stafford

Now I know most of you are expecting me to just rip him a new you know what. Well, I am. Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco and Mark Sanchez all were or are rookie QB’s in the last two years. They never had a five INT game and in fact, were not even close. I’m sick and tired of everyone just playing the, “he’s a rookie trying to learn” card because that card is pure and utter bullshit.

His career is done. His accuracy can best be described as beyond brutal. If someone were to give him a football and said, ” Here Matt, hit the broad side of that barn,” he’d probably over throw it and he’d hit the roof. He has shown absolutely no progress and has shown not an ounce of development. Yeah we’re stuck with him for the next couple years regardless of what happens but he may honestly go down as a bigger bust then Harrington.

I don’t care if you love the guy, every time he drops back I have no faith he’ll find the open guy. Not a single INT he threw was a WR’s fault. Every INT was because he can’t read coverage, he has no accuracy or he just didn’t know what else to do. He’s garbage. At least when Culpepper is in the game Daunte realizes he has a freak of nature playing WR. Every time Daunte saw single coverage he would simply throw it up to him and let him make a play. Stafford doesn’t do any of that. Now I’m the biggest C-Fitz fan on the planet but there is no possible way he should be your first read on 90% of your plays.

How can you go from so good to so bad so fast?

In the first quarter the D looked like they wouldn’t give up a yard. The DL was getting great penetration and the corners were actually covering people. Then everyone came back to life. Will James should never be allowed to step on a football field again. When Ernie Sims went down I actually cheered. (So what he played well last week, one good game in 7 doesn’t count. Levy is better anyway.) You know what, I”m just going to stop before I bash everyone. The bottom line is there is not one player on our D-Line (Avril and Hill included) and only one player in our secondary that deserve to be in the NFL. In fact, out of the them all, only two, maybe three will survive to next season.

The Lions will…

…not win another game all season. It’s over and done with. I may change my mind but if they were to play the Browns next week, I say the Browns win and that’s saying a lot because the Browns are the worst football team I’ve seen in my life.

While I have to agree that we have seen more steps backwards than forwards for Stafford, I think it will be more telling of his development year to year rather than game to game. If he is still making these mistakes at this time next year I’ll be the first to light the torches and hand out pitchforks. One quick correction though, in comparing Stafford to Matt Ryan, Flacco, and Sanchez, you stated that not one of them threw 5 picks in one game, and “in fact, were not even close”. However, Sanchez did throw 5 picks in week 6 against the Bills. While I feel that Stafford is eating my soul when he plays so poorly, what other options do we have? If we had picked anyone else, would we be doing better right now with CPep or Stanton? And who would we draft at QB this year? QB of all positions is the slowest to develop historically, so getting one with the raw tools early I think was the smart move, now it is up to the coaching staff to turn this pile of coal into a diamond.

    Roy Williams Sunday night performance:

5 for 75 yds. Pretty close on your prediction.

“Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco and Mark Sanchez all were or are rookie QB’s in the last two years. They never had a five INT game and in fact, were not even close.”

That is just a stupidly ridiculous statement. First of all, as BigSlim already said, Sanchez threw 5 picks 2 WEEKS AGO. Then you say “in fact, were not even close”? Um…all of them have thrown 3 INTs in at least one game. So unless your definition of close is +/- 1, that statement is wrong and unnecessary. IMO, if you throw 3+ picks in a game, you had a horrible day (not a horrible career). Though those extra 2 picks were pretty costly on Sunday, just because he’s threw a couple more picks in one week doesn’t kill his career. Hell, Peyton Manning threw 6 picks in one week…..JUST 2 YEARS AGO.

    BigSlim,
I agree with you on the “would we be doing any better with C-Pep or Stanton” line. We wouldn’t be doing better. That being said, I would like to see Stanton get a couple starts simply because I’m curious to see if he can be a solid back up qb. Stafford is and will be a bust, there is not a doubt in my mind, so let’s see what else we got.

    RGL,
I was close. A rare treat.. hahaha

    simscity,
You are right about the Sanchez thing. In the heat of the moment I clearly wasn’t thinking. As for your “3 int’s are close to 5″ reference, I guess we just disagree because there is a sharp contrast between 3 ints and 5 for a single game.
It seems you are a Stafford fan and that’s fine. Is it to early to call him a bust??? of course it is but usually qb’s take steps forward, not backward. He has literally not shown the least bit of improvement in any aspect of his game. From accuracy to decision making to his throws, they all leave alot to be desired.

  • simscity says:

I’m a Stafford fan in the sense that I want him to succeed and think that he has the physical tools to do so.

I’m not a Stafford fan in the sense that he can do no wrong and I’m sure he’ll be a top-tier quarterback.

I, like you, was very disappointed with his performance on Sunday. He lost the game for us. But, like you said, its too early to throw him in the doghouse. He’s not playing well right now, but he’s shown signs that he can. Because he’s been both bad and good, I”m not going to make a judgment on him until he’s consistently one way or the other.

You’re right, he doesn’t seem to be improving. But he’s coming back from an injury, and there’s still not enough data to be sure that he isn’t improving. If he’s still throwing 3-5 picks per game in late December, I may declare the sky falling as well.

  • Deacon Blades Boyd says:

    simscity,
if he’s still throwing that many picks i may take one for the team and kill him so we can draft one of the six great qb’s coming out this year….
